Responses 9, Culture Experience

Culture is one of the most interesting topics. I love to know about different countries and meet people from different places. I usually meet people by internet, well this is for my second job. Every country has different typical food, languages, dancing, idioms, so their culture can be very different from Costa Rica culture.
I didn’t have a bad experience last Thursday, but I thought that was in front of everybody and we had to explain about our quilt, but wasn’t like that. The most important was that everybody enjoys talking with people from other countries.
I was talking with a very sweet girl whose name is Susana. She is from Noriega. She is studying Spanish in England that for this reason she is in Costa Rica. She is going to be here for 3 weeks more.
Finally, meet new people from others cultures was good, but I would like to have more experience with others universities and cultures

Responses 8 Expressions

We are responsible for the knowledge we have. We should know ourselves, what are my values, reactions, ideas and know about my culture. Every country has differences in its languages. Even though, in the same language we have different vocabulary and expressions. I read about American expression, maybe those can be real, but really don´t know if those are used over there because I from Costa Rica.
In Costa Rica we have a lot of expressions and idioms. Some of them are positives and some are negatives. Also, Ticos used to say colloquial expressions that are very informal. If you want to read some of them should visit the following pages (If you are Tico, you will know that all expressions are true, but are just for informal conversations.) And most of us do not use them.

Also we can find some sayings in this page:

Or we can find a vocabulary Spanish to Spanish in Costa Rica, but I think are invented by Ticos. (Colloquial vocabulary)

responses 7 The Values Americans Live By

Every country has different values. Some of them are very controversial from one country to another; I think this is because the culture and belief are different. Robert Kohl’s wrote some values from America culture which are mentioned below:

1. Environment/Responsibility
2. Natural and Positive
3. Time and its Control
4. Equality/Fairness
5. Individualism/Independence
6. Self-Help/Initiative
7. Competition
8. Future Orientation
9. Action/Work Orientation
10. Informality
11. Directness/Openness/Honesty
12. Practicality/Efficiency
13. Materialism/Acquisitiveness

Robert mentioned the Americans are very independent and unfriendly people, I agree with him, but I do not agree that everybody is punctual. Not in everywhere in United States. It is the same in every country, we can have a lot values, but not everybody respect them in the same way. Around the world some persons have dreams, so they can be completive, independent, efficiency and have positive values.
It is true how largely different one country's values are with another. However, we should go past these differences and move on to our common goals and aspirations. Going past the differences does not mean we ignore the countries traditions, custom or their values. It means we respect their culture, not because we need to deal with them at the end of the day. It should be because they deserve the respect for their own set of tradition as everybody else in the world does.

Responses 6 SHALL WE DANCE

Describe the difference between both movies? Describe what happened, using operations, acts, and scenarios. And explain the significance of these movies to your lives.
The different in both movies cannot be hard to explain, but I would like to have time to discuss it in class. The first thing that is different on the movies is the social class, which the first movie represent a very high class, and the second one it is mixed. The second difference is the scenario, which the second one was bigger because occurred in different time and places. The thirst different was the massage. And the last thing is the show to us the different of the culture: the first movie represent such as Japans or Chinese culture, and the second one of course, represent American culture, and I can say that in this case we are like in middle of both culture.
This movie has a very significant in my life because this was my dream. I always wanted to be a professional dancer, but I do not have enough time to do it. Other significance is that I can do what I want just if I persist to do it. We have to try to do something until we say that we cannot do it.
Questions to determine appropriateness in cultural practices. Table 6.2 page.72
Who?
Who are the personal involved in the practices? How many are they? How role do they play? What is their relationship? What status do they have?
Movie 1: the people who were involved were from everywhere. They role that they play was dancers. They relationship was and couples, and the status was high.
Movie 2: people who was in the practices where people who wants to learn and people around them. The role that they play was such dancing learners. They relationship was friends. They have different statues.
Where?
Where does the practice occur? What is the place? The physical setting? The social circumstances or situation?

Movie 1. The practice occurred in a restaurant. The place was a dance hall inside the restaurant. The social situation was like couple to practice dancing like sport.
Movie 2. The practice occurred in dancing school and the life of the Mr. Clark. The social situation was because he wanted to learn how to dance.
Why?
Why are they interacting? What are their shared intentions? What tacit intentions or purposes do individual bring to this practice?
They were interacting because they should do it for social life. The intentions were different in both movies because for the first one could be for their status, and the second one it was just for fun an hobby. The tacit purpose I think was to show the different of cultures. Direct or indirect, formal or informal
How?
How is the practice an…? What are they key features? What kind of language is used: verbal, nonverbal, spoken, writing?
Eye contact? Touching? Used of space and distance? Silence? What is the style of communication? Formal or informal? Direct or indirect? Serious, solemn, ironic, comic?
Movie 1. They key features was linguistic extralinguistic, they just use se movements, ayes constant, touching when they dances, and they use a nonverbal communication. The style of communication was linguistic but in silence way. People were very serious, indirect, and formal.
Movie 2. They key feature was linguistic and extralinguistic; they talked, use movements, eyes constant, touching, and the chornemic was mixed depending of the event of the movie. They used a verbal language and Linguistic spoken communication. They were serious sometime, but sometime they were comic. They were formal and direct.

Culture in a Second Language Teaching week 4

Why is so important to know about culture when we are teaching a second language? well, maybe this question sounds easy to answer, but it is not. If we are teaching a second language, we should know about some cultures that we be able to explain the students where the language came from. What some idioms means. I think the most import thing it is because we need to be involved in the language.
In some cases is necessary that teachers travel to another country or countries to be familiar with different cultures; but sometime it is not possible, so teachers must look, learn, and teach the right information.
We can use different ways to teach culture, some of them are; "authentics material, proverbs, role play, culture capsules, students as cultural resources, ethnographic studies, literature, and film." (Elizabeth Peterson and Bronwyn Coltrane, Center for Applied Linguiestics, 2003.) I recommend using students as cultural resources because the students will be interesting to learn about culture which is around them.
In conclusion, culture should be the first thing that professor teach before a second language, but I do not mean teach holidays and food; also, about different meanings of the words in one culture to another.

Intelligent Educational Environments week 3

The CCe that we assisted was very interesting. “Intelligence” was the topic and it could make a discussion.
Many years ago we believed that we born with our IQ and we cannot change it, but actually some psychologist mentioned that we can do it. Gregory Bateson for example; marked that memory is half in the head and half in the Word. So that’s mean that our intelligence can be increasing any time we try. What is your opinion about? Do you agree? Do you think we can improve our IQ?
